Panhala.. the Hill Station










Panhala is a very beautiful hill station. A paradise for nature lovers and persons interested in visiting places of historical importance. Panhala fort lies in the Sahyadri mountains. Panhala fort is located near Kolhapur city. It is 20 km away from the main city.  Panhala’s historic fort throws up memories of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It was from here that Shivaji beleaguered for over four months, escaped one rainy night to Vishalgad, while his faithful general Baji Prabhu Deshpande laid down his life holding down the forces of Siddi Johar at a narrow pass, since christened Pavankhind. The historical fort has spread vast with beautiful sites. The historic sites such as Teen Darwaja, Sajja kothi, Pistha Buruj, Ambarkhana, etc. There is a beautiful famous garden situated at Panhala called as ‘Tabak udyan’.
        The best time to visit this place is during rainy season. Panhala is not only famous for its historical background but also famous for its natural beauty. Taking into consideration the diminishing structure of fort at least few things like Sajja Kothi, Ambarkhana and Teen Darwaja are good in their state. The view from Sajja Kothi is great and one should not miss the sunset from Teen Darwaja point. Sightings of monkeys and many rare bird species is another bonus for nature lovers and photographers. To experience Greenery there is place called ‘Masai Pathar’which is beautifully filled with various flowers. Here you will see the ancient fort ruins among lush greenery and clean air. Of course, the usual fun games and road-side snacks are there but thank fully restricted to small pockets of space and not strewn all over. The famous food one should taste without forget here is ‘Junkha Bhakri’ This is a pleasant place for a picnic and a stay over.
